PROBLEM:
I installed Crystal Reports XI on a Windows Server 2003. There were no errors during the installation, but when I try to run Crystal (Designer) just the hourglass comes up (no error!), nothing else happens.
Is XI supported on 2003? What could be the problem?
ANSWER:
Yes, Crystal Reports XI is supported on 2003. See "System Requirements" page at http://www.businessobjects.com/products/reporting/crystalreports/sysreq.asp.
Regarding the problem, there is something that could be preventing you from running Crystal on the 2003 machine: DEP setting. To check what you currently have set for that:
- From Control Panel, select System
- Select the Advanced tab
- From the Performance group, click on Settings
- Select the Data Execution Prevention tab and make sure you have the "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" option selected
Business Objects recommends that you set your DEP settings to Essential before doing the install of CR, as there may be some instances where things get blocked. Same goes when installing patches.
If you have the other option (Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select) selected, try to add crw32.exe to the exception list in the DEP tab. How to do so is detailed in the article "Adding Software Exceptions In Data Execution Prevention (DEP)
" -- http://www.updatexp.com/dep-exceptions.html.
Note:
The same setting could prevent you from installing Crystal or patches on Windows XP SP2. You should follow the same instructions if that's the case.
