Visual DataFlex "Project Horizon" to be unveiled at DISD 2006

The next generation of Visual DataFlex, project named "Horizon", will be launched at the DataFlex International Software Developers (DISD) Conference being held in Carson City, Nevada on February 23-25, 2006.

"Project Horizon represents the most significant change in the Visual DataFlex development environment in years," says DAW's CTO John Tuohy. "We've created a brand new development Studio. While your application code all remains the same, the new Studio will take that code and transform the way you work with it."

DISD ConferenceThe DISD Board has devoted half of the 2006 conference's agenda to Project Horizon to allow for in-depth presentation and training on the new software's features, capabilities and enhancements. If you're a Visual DataFlex developer, make plans now to attend DISD and be among the first to learn about Project Horizon!

Complete details of Project Horizon will be presented at DISD and published with the Alpha Release of the software that will occur at approximately the same time as the Carson City conference. The DISD Project Horizon topics, presented by Stephen Meeley and John Tuohy, will include:

  • Introduction to Project Horizon (Visual DataFlex 12)
  • Working in the Horizon Studio
  • Working with Horizon projects
  • Debugging
  • Understanding CodeSense and source code management
  • Migrating your development environment to Horizon
  • Migrating your applications to Horizon
  • Working in multiple-developer environments
  • Application deployment
  • Visual DataFlex development roadmap
  • Horizon timeline
  • Preparing for the Horizon Alpha and Beta programs

ASCKEY supply chain app "Commended" at Information Management Awards

Following on the heels of their "finalist" listing at the Information Management (IM) Awards in 2003, ASCKEY Data Services Ltd of Huntingdon, England, a Data Access Channel Partner, has again gained the prestigious organization's recognition of excellence and innovation in the management of business information.

ASCKEY Data Systems IM2005 Award Winners
ASCKEY Data Systems' Julia Cridland, Project Manager, and Pak Chan, Senior Developer, receive the IM2005 Award in Supply Chain management.

At this year's IM2005 Awards, ASCKEY's ProCure 21 web-based monitoring application received the "Commended" award in the Supply Chain management section of the IM Awards, in partnership with the Department of Health. Procure 21 was also short-listed in the Intranet and Business Intelligence categories, and for the overall Premier Project award.

ASCKEY'S sales and marketing manager Chris Hibbert notes that the company's accomplishment is particularly rewarding considering the competition they faced. "We share our 'Commended' status with Pfizer Inc., and we finished ahead of such well known names as Taylor Woodrow," he said.

Procure 21 is a national procurement strategy for the NHS Estates Capital Programme across England. The system provides on line data collection and analysis. The data ranges from subjective information acquired through balanced scorecard pages, to financial information relating to the whole life of major building projects.

ASCKEY Data Services LtdThe Procure 21 process covers all major Hospital building and refurbishment, with users including NHS Trusts, the major construction firms involved in such projects, and the Department of Health and other government departments with interests in this area. The web monitoring system provides access to users from all of these bodies on a fully validated and "need to know" basis so far as access to specific parts of the system is concerned. Editing data is fully interactive, with the extensive data being amendable by those with permission to do so at any time after initial entry and up to final "closing" of any part of a project.

The Visual DataFlex Web Application Server powers the data collection system for the National Health Service's ProCure21 construction management program. It enables the generation and use of the large spreadsheet-like data entry grids, scorecards and complex dynamic forms that are required to collect information from specific parts of the ProCure21 process. It also implements a versatile SQL reporting mechanism that uses XML templates to create interactive graphical reports that can be viewed on the web or downloaded for further analysis in Microsoft Excel.

Application security is implemented in Visual DataFlex in order to control access to commercially sensitive data by organization and functionality by user level.

The Information Management Awards, now in their tenth year, are the premier European recognition of excellence and innovation in the management of business information. The Awards showcase the success stories of organizations that have demonstrated the vision and business skills required to implement very successful projects, and to develop innovative new products.

Free time over the holidays? Build a Web Service!

New Visual DataFlex powered Web Services have been deployed to assist developers with testing the use of Web Services in their applications.

Marcia Booth, Data Access Worldwide
Marcia Booth, developer of the Conversions Visual DataFlex Web Service.

The Conversions Visual DataFlex Web Service, developed by DAW's Marcia Booth, provides a variety of conversion functions that will convert numbers into words (English), numbers into dollar amounts, and texts into title-cased texts.

The service can be tried by anyone by visiting the Conversions Visual DataFlex Web Service page hosted by Data Access Worldwide or by visiting XMethods.

The Conversions service has already been found useful by one VB.net developer:

"I wanted to thank you for providing an extraordinary web service by way of your Conversions WSDL! I've consumed this service in a practice smart client app and was utterly amazed at how it all works! If I had to write the code to convert numbers to words it would take a considerable amount of time. I was able to set up a few lines of code and consume your conversions service in LESS than 5 minutes! It's just a practice app but your WSDL is great! Your web service was the first one I've consumed programmatically! Thanks!"

Brice R.
VB.Net WinForms Developer

The Anagram Visual DataFlex Web Service, developed by DAW's Vincent Oorsprong and hosted on XMethods, demonstrates functions to test your knowledge about anagrams. There are functions to test if a word is an anagram, how many words are stored etc. Anagrams can be stored in multiple languages.

Building client applications to consume Web Services with Visual DataFlex is fast and easy! You just need to run the Visual DataFlex Studio's "Web Service Client Class Generator" to have a package automatically created. After the package is part of the class list, you can add the service to any of your Visual DataFlex applications.

All business solution developers are welcome to try these Web Services! Note that any developer - not just Visual DataFlex developers - can use these Visual DataFlex Web Services in their applications.

Developers interested in having DAW publish a Visual DataFlex Web Service that they feel would be beneficial to business solutions developers are encouraged to contact Marcia Booth.
