Visual DataFlex 12 gets Personal
Visual DataFlex for Windows and Web Application Development.Longtime Visual DataFlex solutions provider Applause Software is among the first of VDF developers to publish a free Visual DataFlex application for personal use under the VDF Personal licensing program with the public release of their RoloFLEX contact management system.

Visual DataFlex Personal is a new, no-cost version of Visual DataFlex licensed for private, personal use only. Visual DataFlex Personal is designed to:

  • Applause Software's RoloFLEX VDF Personal application is available for free!Help developers get acquainted with the VDF software product without being required to make a financial commitment,
  • Provide a free, fast & easy development tool for non-commercial use to anyone interested in learning how to build Windows and Web database applications.

We believe so strongly that new Visual DataFlex developers will be thrilled with the power, efficiency, productivity and capability of VDF that if they try it, they will decide to use it either for personal use and, eventually, for commercial use as well.

DISD Conference kicks off next week in Carson City, Nevada
 

The DataFlex International Software Developers (DISD) Conference returns to Carson City, Nevada on January 25-27 and features a rich agenda loaded with topics that are sure to make developing Windows and Web applications faster & easier than ever!

DISD returns to Carson City Jan '07!Conference topics include The Visual DataFlex AJAX Framework, Building and Leveraging Visual DataFlex 12 Libraries, and overviews of the new features included in Visual DataFlex 12 and Electos 3.

Several developer sponsored sessions will also be held and include demonstrations of a real world Visual DataFlex upgrade and integration of a DataFlex 3.2 character mode point of sale system; using Electos as the front end of a web application and using an iframe for data entry and reporting from a separate web application; a very basic App using CodeJock Xtreme CommandBars; an application that is being developed especially for pen input (custom classes have been written and a set of standards developed to make pen input a viable technique in VDF); and more!

Also included is the free all-day training session, "Learn How to Install and Configure Windows Server," presented by Chris Henley of Microsoft Corporation and a TechNet Presenter.

bullet Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, ODBC Connectivity Kits 5 Beta 2 released
 

The Beta 2 build (5.0.0.19) of the MS SQL, IBM DB2 and ODBC Connectivity Kits for DataFlex have been released for further testing by the Visual DataFlex community.

MS SQL Server for DataFlexThese latest Connectivity Kits provide high performance client/server database connectivity for Visual DataFlex applications and include a number of performance improvements and enhancements.

IBM DB2 for DataFlexThe Beta 2 build includes new mechanisms that better handle user count locks of abnormally terminated processes as well as a fix to the transaction abort logic so that it correctly restores record numbers. For complete information, read What's New in Version 5 (PDF).

We are asking developers who use these Connectivity Kits to help us release the best software possible by testing these with your existing applications and reporting your findings to the Data Connectivity newsgroup.

UK Visual DataFlex Special Interest Group, Cambridge, March 10, 2007
The next meeting of the UK VDF Special Interest Group will be Saturday March 10th, at Asckey Data Services in Cambridge. Keep an eye out in e-News for more information coming soon, but topics being considered include: CodeJock - a CodeJock framework is a possible feature for future VDF 12 development, and some work has already been done. This session will take a look at what VDF developers have accomplished with CodeJock and what the benefits are to using the framework; MS Vista - an update from our special Microsoft correspondent!; VDF 12 Personal Edition - how is it being received, what you can do to help; and Setting up VDF 12 for team development - some tricks you may find helpful.

DataFlex Developers and Users Group (DDUG) Corroboree 2007, Christchurch, New Zealand, August 23-26, 2007
The Australia/New Zealand DataFlex Developers and Users Group (DDUG) will hold its annual Corroboree on August 23-26, 2007 at the luxurious Chateau on the Park Hotel in Christchurch, New Zealand.

DataFlex Developers and Users Group (DDUG) CorroboreeDDUG member Phil Kirby has extended "Greetings from Downunder!" to all VDF developers worldwide, and international guests are most welcome at the event. As Mr. Kirby notes, "If past experience is any indication, it will be well worth the trip!"
